On January 28, 2013, the New Jersey Fair Housing Act was amended (C.52:27D-311) so as to allow a municipality to enter into an agreement with a developer to set aside affordable units in a residential development for qualified veterans. This preference only applies to affordable rental units when the preference has been established by an agreement between the developer or landlord and the municipality.
Please indicate on your preliminary application if you are a veteran. At this time, there are not many developments that provide a preference to veterans but veterans preference may be added in additional locations in the future.
If you are invited to submit a full application, you must submit a clear copy of your DD-214 with your application materials to qualify for veteran's preference. To qualify for the veteran’s preference:
- Your DD-214 must indicate that you were honorably discharged or released under honorable circumstances from active full-time duty in time of war in some branch of the Armed Forces of the United States.
- Your DD-214 must indicate that you actively served in time of war during one of the periods identified on this list.
